Chapter 10
Budgeting Time and Money
The number of books written by experts about virtually every nuance of time and money management would no doubt fill a substantial library. We are not going to attempt to deal in detail with all aspects of these rather complex fields. Rather, we are going to look at this principle as W. Clement Stone does: from the point of view of time and money management as motivator—how they can help you motivate yourself and inspire others.
The plain fact is that both time and money are immensely important factors in determining how you feel about yourself. When you spend your time wisely and budget your money carefully, you feel good about yourself. Conversely, if you fall into a pattern of wasting your time or squandering your money, you begin a downward spiral that manifests itself at worst in a feeling of uselessness and at best in a nagging feeling that you could have done more with your life if you had only been more prudent in the management of your resources.
Like most other success principles, Budgeting Time and Money is a habit that expands exponentially with use. As you become better at budgeting your time, you will accomplish far more because you not only use time more wisely, you use it more efficiently. You find faster, more efficient ways to perform routine tasks, and you become better at establishing priorities. You will find that you can quickly dispatch things that previously seemed boring and time-consuming; you can then get on to the more interesting and challenging tasks. In volunteerism there’s an old saying that goes: “If you want to get something done, find a busy person.”
Somehow those who already have more than they can do seem to be able to accomplish more than those who have plenty of time to get the job done. They have learned that taking action makes even the most dreaded jobs easier. Once you begin the job, it never seems as difficult as it did when you sat around wondering about how tough you thought it was going to be. W. Clement Stone’s motivator “Do it now!” works overtime when it comes to time management. Procrastination leads to self-doubt, needless worry, and more procrastination.
Careful money management is also a great motivator. Increasing your net worth, accumulating wealth for what you can do with it to help others, and for the advantages it can offer you and your family, are worthwhile objectives.
The greatest advantage of budgeting your income and expenses, however, is that it frees your mind to concentrate on achieving your goals. If you know that expenses are covered and you don’t have to worry about paying your bills, you can devote all your time and energy to achieving your goals. And achieving them becomes easier. You simply feel better and more successful; you attract others to you because they like dealing with successful people.
There is also a peace of mind that comes with financial security that allows you to set your own agenda for your life.
